GRANDVIEW - Mothers wanting a place where they can learn from other mothers, a place to obtain advice and socialize, have that opportunity through the Moms of Tots group that meets at the Grandview Church of Nazarene.

Rachel Morten, a member of the group for two years, said her sister-in-law formed the group, formerly associated with the national MOPS (Moms of Pre-schoolers) organization, when she moved to the Lower Valley.

"She had been associated with MOPS where she used to live and couldn't find a group here," said Morten.

That was approximately four years ago, and the small group is continuously growing, she shared.

Because of the economic climate, the group didn't renew its membership with the national organization, but changed its name so that it could continue meeting.

"The membership is now $5 instead of $40," said Kelly Adamson, who has been a member for three years.

She continued, saying she believes the group is important for mothers of young children. "It gives them the opportunity to meet and socialize with one another."

Every second and fourth Thursday of the month, the women gather for a precious two hours. The children are cared for in the nursery or another room for the older youngsters.

The mothers, on the other hand, gather for a brunch and social time before listening to a featured guest speaker, according to Adamson.

Speakers have covered a variety of topics, including fashion on a budget, gardening tips, car seat installation and other helpful tips for women and mothers of young children, said Morten.

Adamson said the mothers in Moms of Tots are busy caring for children who have not yet reached kindergarten.

"Pregnant women can join, too," Morten added.

Adamson said the group provides the mothers with a sense of commonality and support, as well as an "escape from the home."

The group members share their experiences, hold discussions and provide one another support.

"It's a time we all look forward to," said Adamson, adding, "It's a place where every mom can feel welcome."

This year, too, the group is looking at the possibility of working on a community service project.

"We are thinking about Operation Christmas Child or doing something for the troops, but it hasn't been decided upon," Adamson stated.

The Moms of Tots next meeting is Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Grandview Nazarene Church.

All mothers of youngsters not yet in kindergarten in the Lower Valley are invited to join.
