Dance in Mabton could lead to acting roles

MABTON - Benjamin Vargas, a 1994 Mabton High School graduate, is returning to Mabton Friday, July 7, in a search for bit actors for a movie he's planning to film in Mabton and Grandview later this summer.
Vargas is staging a benefit dance at the Mabton Elementary School gymnasium (805 Washington St.) on July 7 from 8:30 p.m. to 1 o'clock in the morning to help raise funds for his movie Brown Town.
"We'll be filming during the dance. My cinematographer will be there and, hopefully, we'll include some of that footage in the movie," said Vargas.
"I have quite a few little parts in my movie and I want to use local talent," he said.
The dance will serve as a mini-casting call, Vargas explained, as he issued an invitation to hopeful actors to take their most recent photos and contact information with them to the dance.
"I will be reviewing the pictures and information and then I would hope to be able to cast some of those people in the movie," said Vargas.
"Unfortunately, we live in a society where alcohol and music go hand-in-hand," said Vargas, "But this is going to be a non-alcoholic dance. People can bring their own soda pop, any non-alcoholic beverage they want, have a good time and, maybe, support my movie."
Vargas said he is asking for a $20 per person donation at the door, but won't turn down any amount that is offered.
"I'll take whatever donations are given and they'll be greatly appreciated," said Vargas, who has already raised half the funds he needs to film Brown Town, which, he says, is a screenplay "about three guys trying to figure out who they are in a sea of hating people, who are trying to tell them who they are".
Vargas gave up teaching career to pursue an acting career while he is still single and able to be flexible in his choice of employment. He appeared frequently on TV's Grey's Anatomy as an extra and captured a national commercial spot for the Saturn car company. Now, he is turning his attention to the big screen, planning to direct, produce and act in Brown Town.
Vargas anticipates shooting the movie in early August in Mabton and Grandview.
