Hillcrest auction to benefit seniors

Ethel Bestebreur
By Rachel Lucas
The residents at Hillcrest Manor and Rehabilitation Center have been busily cutting five inch squares of flannel fabric for a quilt that will be auctioned off later this summer.
Ethel Bestebreur, a volunteer at Hillcrest for the past 15 years, took the pieces cut by the residents and made the quilt that will be auctioned.
Making quilts for auctions at Hillcrest is nothing new for Bestebreur, who has made quilts in the past.
All materials for the quilt were donated, including the sheeting, batting and bias tape.
After six weeks of work, the finished product is beautiful. "I just did it step by step," said Bestebreur. The quilt was made for a twin size bed, but will make a nice decorative blanket for a queen size bed.
The auction will take place in late September, when Hillcrest holds its last barbecue.
The money made from the auction will help the residents at Hillcrest pay for projects that will make their lives more enjoyable. Last year the money was used to contract high school students, who constructed a gazebo for the residents.
