MABTON - Via a 4-0 vote the Mabton City Council authorized the hiring of two new police officers at last night's meeting.

Both officers are currently working in Granger and will begin in Mabton on Sept. 1.

Cas Cedillo, a veteran police officer with more than five years of experience in Granger, was hired on as the city's new sergeant. He spent two years at the Yakima County Juvenile Detention Center and two years at the Benton-Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center before working at Granger.

Council authorized $3,540 a month in salary for Cedillo.

Mario Castilleja Jr. was hired as a reserve officer. He too, will start work in Mabton on Sept. 1. Reserve officers in Mabton are not paid.

The new additions to the Mabton Police Department will bring the total number of paid officers in the department to two. Mabton now has three reserve officers, which includes the student resource officer.

Also at last night's meeting the Mabton City Council adopted a resolution to protect individuals engaged in non-violent civil rights demonstrations.

The resolution was more of a house-keeping issue as the city needs to have a resolution like this on the books to receive CDBG funds.

The council also voted to extend the city's contract for garbage services with Yakima Waste Systems, Inc. to June 30, 2020. Along with the contract extension the council mandated city residents will use the new wheeled carts available through Yakima Waste Systems, Inc.

Seniors will pay $6.81 for a 48-gallon cart. Other residents will pay $16.84 for a 96-gallon cart.

The new carts are part of Yakima Waste Systems' effort to become more efficient. The carts can be picked up by an automatic arm attached to the garbage truck. The move will allow just one employee to service the Mabton area.
