| By Corey Russell Some have been there for 10 years, others 15 and there's even eight employees who have 24 years of service at the Provident Horizon Group. These and 27 other long-time employees at Provident Horizon Group in Sunnyside and Yakima were honored Monday for their dedication and service. "We're taking this day to recognize some of our employees," Sandra Rivera, a quality insurance coordinator at Provident Horizon Group, said. The Provident Horizon Group is an employment training workshop for people with disabilities. There they learn entry level skills to work in the community. There are three groups of workers the group supports: individuals, who go out and work on their own; group programs, where groups of trained people go out with a supervisor and do work; and the pre-vocational workers, who work in the shop. The individual workers have the skills to work on their own but even if they have difficulties, someone from the group will come to them and support them by explaining and showing them how to do the job. "The pre-vocational workers get contract work," Rivera said. "The materials are sent here and then the pieces are assembled and sent back." She added most of the work done now is putting together music stands. She said the biggest barriers her workers face is communication. "Trying to find out what they want to do and then getting companies to give our clients a chance," she said. As part of the celebration, Provident Horizon Group held a barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers. There was a karaoke machine for the employees to sing songs from and plenty of music and dancing. |
