'Beer run' at Swan Road market results in chase, arrests
By Corey Russell
Yesterday (Tuesday) at 5:12 p.m. the Sunnyside Police Department was contacted by 911 dispatchers assisting the Yakima County Sheriff's Office with a theft from Swan Market in the 700 block of Swan Road.
Officers were notified of a possible "beer run", or theft of beer, from the store and were told the vehicle was heading north on Swan Road towards Yakima Valley Highway.
The vehicle led Sunnyside police on a chase that reached speeds of 90 mph. The suspect vehicle, a 1996 Mercury Mystique, was driving erratically in and out of oncoming traffic, which caused other motorists to have to swerve out of the suspects' way. Suspects in the vehicle were discarding items from the car.
The suspects' route took them to the Outlook area where the vehicle they were driving spun out on Reeves Road. All four suspects fled and police eventually caught one adult and three juveniles.
The adult, Edgar Lopez Ceja, has yet to be charged and his part in the events are being investigated. Two of the juveniles were charged with unlawful or illegal possession of a firearm and criminal trespass in the second degree. The other juvenile was charged with criminal trespass in the second degree, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. All three will be arraigned later today.
Minutes before this call came in police were dispatched to the 900 block of South 15th Street for a report of an assault with a firearm.
The shots came from a gold colored sport utility vehicle occupied by two Hispanic males. The suspect fired the weapon at two potential victims. One of the victims was hit in the foot by a bullet that ricocheted, although no injury was reported.
Police have recovered evidence at the scene but will not release any information on the victims or the evidence to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Police are asking anyone with knowledge of this incident to call 837-2120.
