GRANDVIEW - The Grandview Neptunes kept up with the Wapato swim team for most of Wednesday night's meet but when it came time for the freestyle relays, Wapato showed its strength and pulled away to post a 407.5-318.5 victory and hand Grandview its fourth straight loss. "We were close in points going into the last relay but when it was finished we were down by 50," Ronda Penwell, co-coach of the Neptunes, said. Wapato outscored Grandview 25-10 in the freestyle relays and added some more points in the individual medley races to secure the win. Bryce Carpenter won all of his five events in the boys 10&U class but couldn't help the Neptunes in the relay events due to there not being a boys 10&U relay team. Carpenter was never seriously challenged but teammate Jose Castilleja gave him a run for his money in the 40-yard butterfly and 40-yard freestyle events, finishing second both times. Kinzi Poteet continued to shine for the Neptunes, posting victories in all five of her girls 14&U individual events and helping her relay team to two victories. In the 40-yard butterfly Poteet broke her own pool record of 23.47 seconds with a time of 23.12 seconds. Poteet set the previous record at the Neptunes' last home meet. This is Poteet's sixth year swimming for the Neptunes and seems to be enjoying her success. "This is the first year where I've started to break records," she said. "It's been fun." Grandview's Karissa Carpenter, Kara Phillips, Tiffany Owens and Sarah Roberts teamed up to win the 160-yard medley relay in the girls 12&U group. This same group won the freestyle relay also. Roberts went on to win the 40-yard breaststroke. Owens won the 160-yard individual medley and Phillips finished runner-up twice in the 40-yard freestyle and the 160-yard individual medley. In the 16&U age group, Sydney Mottice won three times for the Neptunes. She led a sweep in the 40-yard butterfly, followed by teammates Cheyen Schenck, Rachel Roberts and Violet Bussell. In the 40-yard backstroke Mottice beat Wapato's Danielle Compton by almost a full five seconds. Her second place finish came in the 160-yard individual medley, losing to Wapato's Amanda Juarez. In the same age group for the boys, Keagan Christensen placed first in one event, the 40-yard backstroke. Allison Grow brought home a victory for Grandview in the 18&U girls 40-yard butterfly and a second place finish in the backstroke. Teammates Larelle Michener and Brittnee Sanchez each added a second place finish at 18&U. The other first place finish for Grandview came from Brian Michener. He beat Wapato's Eric Ihnen by two-tenths of a second to win the 40-yard breaststroke in the boys 14&U division. Sisters Emily Denton and Jessica Denton each earned a second place finish for the Neptunes in the girls 8&U group. Micah Binfet and Taran Perez combined for three second place finishes on the boy's side at 8&U. Taylor Hall had two second place finishes in the girls 10&U races, followed by Grandview teammate Tiana Perez with one second place finish. The Neptunes (1-5) will try to stop their four-game losing streak tonight when they travel to Selah for a swim meet. |
