It was over before last night's swim meet fully got underway. The host Sunnyside Sharks claimed one of the most lopsided victories ever in Mid-Valley Summer Swim League action, defeating the visiting Naches Barracudas by a 692-120 score.
Sunnyside's swimmers chalked up an incredulous 71 victories, compared to the mere three wins Naches collected.
The overwhelming defeat of the Barracudas upped the Sharks' league record to 5-0 on the season. Next up for the Sunnyside swimmers is a meet in the Prosser pool against the Piranhas tonight (Thursday). The Sharks, swimming in their home pool, edged Prosser by just 10 points in their league opener back on June 15.
Last night, the Barracudas had little to take back with them to Naches from the pounding the Sharks administered. The Barracudas' only real highlights came in the girls 8&U division, where Lexi St. Martin picked up a win in the 50-meter freestyle and Naches teammate Kaley Roberts sped to victory in the 50-backstroke. The only other win Naches came away with was Sienna Nelson's victory in the girls 10&U 50-meter breaststroke race.
Sunnyside had its usual performances from the complement of swimmers who dominate their age divisions meet in and meet out-athletes like Brittany Broersma, Toni Marie Castillo, Katie Knee, Rachelle Durfey, Fox Rodriguez, Tad Tyhuis, Tim Stiteler, Cristian Vargas, Jacob Hollander and Travis Anctil. But Sunnyside also picked up a few wins from Sharks who don't regularly come out on top.
Two of those wins came from petite Heidi Vergara, a girls 8&U competitor, who clipped teammate Kalie Bestebreur by six and a half seconds for top honors in the 50-butterfly, and who won by nearly seven seconds over Roberts of Naches in the 50-breaststroke.
Two more rare victories were earned by girls 14&U swimmers Megan Schlenker and Joslyn Ahumada. Schlenker was the clear victor in the 50-butterfly, beating her closest opponent by 2.65 seconds. Ahumada's win came in the 50-breaststroke, in which she defeated the runner-up-teammate Alissa Martin-by nearly seven-tenth's of a second. Martin, though, won the three other races in that age division.
Sunnyside's Kaitlyn Broersma prevented her teammate Knee from sweeping the girls 16&U races by picking up a nearly four-tenth's of a second margin of victory over Knee in the 50-breaststroke. Broersma added a pair of second place finishes and a third place showing to her night's work, as well as being on both winning relay teams in her age division.
Alexander Henry and Sam Bardell also got into the act last night, as the two Sharks made a clean sweep of it for Sunnyside in the boys 16&U races. Henry was a four-time winner in the individual races, with Bardell earning his victory in the 50-backstroke.
