SHS boys second at 3A Districts

YAKIMA - The boys Sunnyside High School track team placed second at this past Friday's District Championships held in Yakima. The girls were third.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for this coming Friday's Regional Championships at Eisenhower High School.

Sunnyside's Elias Medrano qualified for Regionals in three events. He placed first in the 200m and 400m events and was second in the 100m. Sunnyside's Kennedy Sarmiento was third in the 200m and teammate Emmanual Torres was fourth in the in the 400m.

Sunnyside's Juan Reynoso placed first in the 3200m event to advance to this Friday's Regional tournament. He also advanced in the 1600m with a fourth place finish.

Teammate Nathan Gonzalez was second in the 3200m and will also advance.

Sarmiento won the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.09. He placed second in the 300m hurdles with a time of 40.54.

Sarmiento, Elias Medrano, Nicholas Deleon and Mario Madrigal teamed up to place second in the 4x100 relay. Eduardo Cuevas, Sergio Lugo, Audiel Sanchez and Torres combined to give Sunnyside a third place finish in the 4x400 relay.

Sunnyside's Brian Bennett advanced to the Regional tournament in the discus throw with a second place finish. His teammate, Andres Cantu, was third and will also advance.

Eric Amaro gave the Grizzlies a fourth place finish in the javelin throw and will advance to this Friday's tournament.

Eduardo Salmeron advanced in two events, as well. He placed third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

Sunnyside advanced two in the pole vault. Ryan Rice was second when he cleared 12 feet and Jesse Hernandez was third when he cleared 11-6.

For the Lady Grizzlies, Kendra Meeker led the way with a first place finish in the discus throw. She also placed fourth in the shot put to advance to Regionals in that event, as well.

Samantha Reyes advanced for the Grizzlies in the javelin throw. Her heave of 95-9 was good enough for second place.

Katie Herndon continued her fine season in the pole vault. The Lady Grizzly placed second in the event when she cleared 9-9. Teammate Geordan Skyles placed third and will also advance to Regionals.

Ana Lugo gave Sunnyside a second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 31-6.75.

Sunnyside's Marisa Broersma advanced in two events. She placed second in the 400m and fourth in the 200m.

Her teammate, Celia Vargas, advanced in the 800m with a third place showing.

Also advancing for the girls was the 4x400 relay team. Lugo, Vargas, Ayla Schmick and Broersma clocked a 4:43.91 time in the event for a third place finish.

Rounding up the team of Lady Grizzlies heading to Regionals was Schmick, who placed fourth in the long jump.
