Sun Valley 14/15-year-olds close out 2006 summer play
By Bob Story
RICHLAND - The most successful of Sunnyside's three Sun Valley baseball teams this summer, the local 14/15-year-olds finished up the 2006 campaign by winning one of three games this past weekend at the season ending postseason league tournament.
Sun Valley snared its one tournament victory Saturday morning, posting an 11-1 decision against Prosser. Victor Nunez was the catalyst for the Sunnyside club, as he twirled a three-hit, complete game masterpiece. Nunez fanned seven Prosser batters in the seven-inning affair while walking only three.
Nunez helped his own cause at the plate, ripping four hits in four official trips to the dish. He lashed a two-run single in the second inning, and drove in three more runners with a two-run triple in the third and a single in the fifth.
Also coming through with multi-hit performances against Prosser were Alex Aguilar, who drove in a run on a 2-for-2 effort, and Justin Reyes, who was 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Sun Valley opened the postseason tourney Friday evening, absorbing a 15-6 loss to Milestone of Richland.
Nunez had the lone multi-hit performance for the Sunnyside teens, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. One of his hits went for extra bases, an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth.
Milestone plated seven runs against Sun Valley in the top of the first and never looked back, scoring runs in every inning until the game was called after five because of the two-hour and 15-minute game time limit.
Sun Valley's season came to a close Saturday afternoon, when Arby's of Richland was awarded an 8-7 victory.
The Sunnyside team had actually forged a 10-8 lead on Arby's, plating three runs in the top of the sixth, but with Arby's batting in the bottom of the sixth the umpires called the game because of the time limit. Because the sixth inning wasn't played in its entirety before time expired, the game ending score reverted back to the score after five frames, which was in Arby's favor, 8-7.
In the losing cause, Travis Jones and Justin Reyes each banged out three hits for Sun Valley. Reyes, with his three singles, drove in a team high four runs that game. Jones had one RBI. Coming through with two hits apiece for Sun Valley were Aguilar and Oscar Hernandez.
