OBITUARY

LUCILE M. HOTCHKISS

November 24, 2009

Lucile M. Hotchkiss, 101, of Prosser and formerly of Chewelah completed her journey to heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009.

She was born Oct. 30, 1908 on Long Prairie at Valley to Frank and Fannie Smith.

Lucile moved to Kettle Falls, Idaho (Meyers Falls then) with her parents, as her father had a butcher shop there. When she was nine years old, her father got a job at the Magnesite plant in Chewelah and the family moved there.

The family attended the Congregational Christian Church in Chewelah.

After Lucile graduated from high school, she attended Cheney Normal School in Cheney for two years. She worked in the dining room at the school, and she met a girl who witnessed to her about Christ, and that helped Lucile in her decision to personally give her heart and life to Jesus Christ.

When she came home to teach, she taught two years in Blue Creek and six years in Chewelah. Her teaching career also included the Sunnyside School on a road to Summit Valley, Asotin Grade School and Springdale Grade School. While teaching in Chewelah she began attending the Free Methodist Church. She also took some time off from teaching to go back to school at Seattle Pacific College (University) in Seattle.

She later met Art Hotchkiss from Colville and they married on June 4, 1937 in Chewelah.

Art felt the call of God on his life to be a pastor, and he and Lucile served in the Free Methodist Churches in Walla Walla; Tekoa; Cloverland; Deer Flat, Idaho; Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Sanders, Idaho; Summit Valley; Priest River, Idaho; and Adrian, Ore. They purchased a home in Chewelah in 1968 and later retired there.

Lucile enjoyed reading, gardening, canning fruit, huckleberry picking, fishing, crocheting, knitting and loved to visit shut-ins.

She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Dave and Sherrill Hotchkiss of Ottumwa, Iowa and Dan and Jo Hotchkiss of Grandview; three grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and two sister-in-laws.

Celebration funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Abundant Life Fellowship Church in Chewelah. Pastor Dan Hotchkiss officiated and many others also participated. Burial followed at Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville.

Memorial gifts may be sent to Free Methodist World Missions, P.O. Box 535002, Indianapolis, Ind. 46253-5002.

Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville was in charge of arrangements.
