Allied Arts of Yakima Valley celebrates 50-year anniversary with series of events

YAKIMA - A number of events are planned for the coming months at the Allied Arts of Yakima Valley in standing with 50 years of providing community members with arts and entertainment opportunities.
On Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. through Jan. 28, 2013, a "Football Widows Unite" class to enjoy time together "getting crafty" with Diane Smith.
A 3-D drawing class is being offered on Tuesdays through Nov. 20 for youngsters, ages 8-12. Teaching the 3:45 to 5 p.m. class is Carmen Petersen.
Children will learn how to build hovercrafts, cars, robots, flying boats and more with Legos. They will then learn to transfer their creations into drawings.
High school students and adults can enjoy learning how to paint with water-based materials and methods on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through Nov. 27. Eric Ashcraft is the instructor, helping those attending the class to explore the methods of transferring drawing to painting, tools for painting, mediums, application techniques and more.
Those wanting to learn the arts of cartooning and Manga can participate in Thursday classes with Mark Northcott from 4 to 5 p.m. through Dec. 13.
Still life drawing classes are being offered on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. through Dec. 6.
The class, taught by Northcott, is offered to high school students and adults.
Also being offered are watercolor classes for home school students on Tuesdays from 12:45 to 2 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Home school students ages 7 and up can participate in the classes instructed by Megan McFadden, exploring basic watercolor techniques.
An adult poetry writing class is being offered November through June on the first Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. The class is being offered to adults, ages 18 and up.
On the same note, Allied Arts of Yakima Valley is offering poetry open mic nights on the second Wednesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m. through the month of March.
The open mic nights are held in the Peggy Lewis Gallery at the Allied Arts Center.
