GUEST COLUMNMarriage matters, who knew?
cartoon courtesy of Cagle Cartoons November 02, 2012 Wow. After decades of being told that marriage doesn't matter - that it's just a piece of paper - all of a sudden there is a blitz for wedded bliss. It does matter, the commercials say. In fact, we are told now that the only way for a couple to be fully committed and happy is to be married. Wow. That's got to be a shock to all those people who bought the lie that sharing a home and bed outside of marriage was just fine or even preferable to that so-called "piece of paper." I know, the commercials tout marriage as a must because gays want to marry. If you know me, you know that my view is that marriage is one man/one woman. But I can't help but be thankful for this push on marriage's importance. What a testimony by all these happily married husbands and wives in these commercials, sharing how the most important thing in their life is the MARRIAGE they share together! Hopefully this means that couples who for years thought marriage was passe or just a government institution will say aye to "I do." I can just picture it: In the weeks and months to come out-of-wedlock couples standing in line to get married thanks to the impact of these pro-marriage commercials. Never thought I'd say this, but here's a big thank you to the liberal groups and their push for gay marriage. Never before across my TV screen have I seen so much advocacy for marriage and how it strengthens families and communities. My hope is that gay marriage doesn't pass on next Tuesday's ballot, while the message that marriage matters resonates with a new generation. |
