Let's do up Christmas in a big way in Sunnyside
November 16, 2012
Sunnyside's Lighted Farm Implement Parade in December is one that many look forward to all year long.
This event is hosted by the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, whose main task is to bring folks into town and to promote the local businesses. I think the chamber does a pretty good job of this, but I would like to see more of the businesses, organizations and individuals in the community take this event to the next level.
I applaud the Sunnyside FFA chapter for taking on the Cookies with Mrs. Claus event, which was previously hosted by Darigold.
But I want more.
I'd like to see the local Fraternal Order of Eagles jump in on the bandwagon with a festival of its own for the whole community, tying in with the festive Christmas spirit that lurks in Sunnyside at the first of December. I'm sure there are many more activities than I am aware of, but I'd like to be aware. I think we have big potential to work together in this and make Sunnyside THE place to go during the Christmas season.
I'd like to see so many activities, festivals and events going on that the parade itself would be so packed that we have to elongate the route.
Just imagine, the hotels would be full, there would be no where to park and local businesses would reap the benefit of more business.
Most importantly, I'd like to see a local winery or, perhaps, Snipes Mt. Brewery host a winter ball. I'm always looking for a place to go where I can dress fancy, and if there's spirits that are served, that's just a bonus in my mind.
What about staging a holiday ballet, like the Nutcracker? What about a church hosting a big production of Christ's birth?
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of amazing events already going on; however, Sunnyside has the potential to be so much more during the holiday season.
Why not take advantage of the popularity of this annual parade by making Sunnyside's holiday celebration the most memorial and magical of any festivals around?
