Council OK's tax increase

November 16, 2012

In action during a budget workshop last night, Thursday, the Sunnyside City Council approved a 1 percent increase in property taxes within the city limits.

According to a voter-approved initiative, municipalities can increase property taxes by no more than 1 percent each year.

The increase will add $18,317 to Sunnyside's city coffers in 2013, not including property taxes received from new construction or an increase in assessed property values.

The increase amounts to about $2.51 more in annual property taxes for a home valued at $150,000. "Realistically that's a cup of coffee, so that's not a bad deal," noted Councilman Nick Paulakis.
