Sweet settles up with former Selah businessman

YAKIMA - Sunnyside Interim City Manager Frank Sweet reached a settlement with a former garbage contractor during an appearance in small claims court this week.
Gordon Meling, a garbage service provider for Selah while Sweet was city administrator there, filed a small claims case for $5,000 against Sweet in October.
Meling claims he loaned Sweet and his wife $15,000 about 10 years ago and he is still owed more than $9,000.
Meling said he went to small claims to avoid lawyer fees and was willing to settle for $5,000. Meling added that the loan took place after he had sold his garbage business and was no longer Selah's contractor.
During the small claims court appearance this week, Sweet paid the $5,000. "I paid the $5,000 plus court costs on the record so the judge would note I paid it," Sweet told the Daily Sun News this morning, Friday.
Meling said this morning that financially things between him and Sweet are now "okay" following the settlement.
"The financial part of it is settled," Meling told the Daily Sun News this morning.
"But there are other problems," he added in reference to Sweet's scheduled appearances early next year in Yakima County Superior Court on theft and destroying public record allegations filed by the city of Selah.
Meling declined to say whether or not he'll appear to testify in court on Sweet's other charges.
"I can't tell you because I don't know for sure what's going to happen," he said.
