Three Lady Grizzlies unbeaten at invitational
December 28, 2012
RICHLAND - Competing in a round-robin format at a wrestling invite at Hanford High School yesterday, three of the eight Sunnyside High School girls who made the trip to Richland returned home with unblemished records.
The trio of unbeaten Lady Grizzlies consisted of Kayla Gonzalez, Abigail Elizondo and Daisy Chavez.
Gonzalez, at 112 lbs., took to the mat twice Thursday. She notched a 10-3 victory and pinned her one other opponent. SHS Coach Terry Shines, who noted that Gonzalez is quite adept at riding her opponents but still needs to improve some while on her feet, remains undefeated on the season (14-0).
Elizondo, a 124-pounder, dominated her foes in the three bouts she wrestled. Shines said she pinned all three opponents.
"Abigail is very technical, she shoots well and she uses good pin combinations," he said.
Chavez, whom Shines said also wrestles at 124 lbs., went 3-0 on the day, as well.
SHS freshman Sierra Gonzalez split her two 137-lb. matches at Hanford. Shines said the underclassman got pinned in her opening bout, but rallied to claim a fall in her last match-up. Shines said with seasoning and more experience on the mat, he expects her to continue to find success.
Jennifer Garcia and Amanda Bazan, both of whom Shines said compete in the 170-lb. weight class, picked up a victory Thursday. Each, though, absorbed a pair of losses.
Shines said freshman Jeniya Guillen (118 lbs.) was winless in her two matches, but believes her potential is limitless. "She's got all the makings to be a very good wrestler," he said.
Sunnyside's Adriana Chavez (106 lbs.) also made the trip to Hanford High School, but came away with an 0-4 record, Shines said. The lighter weight classes are extremely competitive in girls wrestling this season, he explained, but thinks Chavez will improve as the season progresses.
Shines is giving the Lady Grizzly grapplers a break from practicing until next Wednesday, Jan. 2.
"Then we'll hit it hard for three days, getting ready for the Saturday, Jan. 5, invite at our gym," Shines said.
