Mabton wins ugly
January 09, 2013
COWICHE - The Mabton Lady Vikings last night may have won 48-39 over host Highland, but Lady Viking Coach Chris McCallum said it wasn't a pretty game.
"We started strong with a 14-2 run in the first quarter. Then we went into coast mode," he said of the SCAC match-up.
Mabton allowed the Scotties to narrow the lead a little in the second quarter, but still outscored Highland 13-10 to end the opening half with a 27-12 lead.
"We got sloppy with the ball, turning it over 27 times," said McCallum, noting the Scotties grabbed the ball from the glass 16 more times than the Lady Vikes.
"After the first quarter, we just went through the motions," said the coach.
In the third quarter, Mabton maintained the lead in spite of its missteps. The Lady Vikings tallied 16 more points and allowed Highland to score 12.
The final stanza was the worst for Mabton. Highland outscored the Lady Vikings by 10 points.
"We need to find our rhythm and stay in it during ugly games like this one," said McCallum.
Leading the Lady Vikes last night with a team-high 19 points and five steals was Soila Zaragoza.
Teammate Alyssa Nash contributed eight points to Mabton's score, six of which came from behind the charity stripe.
For Highland, it was Lauren Newman who dropped in a double-digit score of 16 points. She had seven steals.
"The main thing is that we got the win," said McCallum, noting his team cannot fall apart during a game and expect the same results.
Mabton (3-2, 5-6) will this coming Friday host Cle Elum.
