Mireles now 21-2 on the year
January 18, 2013
BENTON CITY - The Mabton wrestling team as a whole may have not fared well against Connell and Royal last night, but two of the Viking competitors did.
Vicente Mireles is having a good season. He improved his record to 21-2 after defeating Connell's Hunter Clawson and Royal's Tyler Garretson by way of pin in 132-lb. action.
Against Garretson, Mireles first scored two points for a takedown. Continuing the momentum in his favor, the Viking "...rode the guy out, turned him and pinned him...he took care of business," according to Mabton Coach John Kilian, noting the Knight was on his back in one-minute flat.
Mireles, too, made quick work of Clawson, who was subdued in just 56 seconds.
Unfortunately for Mabton, those pins resulted in the only team points the Vikings would get in either match.
Royal earned 59 points as a result of several forfeits and two victories over the remaining boys on the Viking squad.
Matt Bartlett of the Knights pinned Rudy Ramirez (182 lbs.) in 30 seconds, and Connell's Christian Farias defeated Ramirez by way of pin in 54 seconds.
Also wrestling for Mabton last night was Isaac Velasquez at 195 lbs. He suffered a loss by technical fall (17-2) to Hunter Follett of Royal. The Viking succumbed to Greg Hienen of Connell, but it took the Eagle nine takedowns and 4:53 before he was able to subdue Velasquez.
Brandon Marquez of Mabton did not compete last night due to an injured knee, but Kilian is hoping the Viking standout will return to the mat tomorrow (Saturday) for the Mid Valley Classic, which his team hosts.
In girls action, there were three of four Lady Vikings who defeated their Royal opponents and the team was 2-0 against Connell.
Mary Gutierrez (118 lbs.) improved her record to 15-1 on the season. She pinned Erica Veenstra of the Knights in 1:27, and subdued Connell's Martha Zurita in 3:33.
Gutierrez's younger sister, Noemi, earned a 9-3 decision over Megan Mianecki of Royal in 112-lb. action.
Jazmin Mendoza of the Lady Vikes pinned Royal's Maddi Thomas in 57 seconds and won a 5-0 decision over Connell's Brenda Rodriguez in the 124-lb. bouts.
The fourth Lady Viking to compete against the Knights was 106-pounder Cassandra Moreno, who suffered a 7-0 loss to Anahi Gomez.
The Mid Valley Classic in Mabton begins tomorrow at 10 a.m.
