Lady Vikings live to play another game
February 11, 2013
BURBANK - The Mabton Lady Viking basketball squad succeeded in upending Ki-Be in a District loser-out game this past Saturday and will this coming Thursday travel back to Burbank to compete against LaSalle.
"The girls came out and took charge in the first quarter and didn't look back," Mabton Coach Chris McCallum said of this past Saturday's 43-34 victory.
He was pleased that the Lady Vikings opened the game with an 18-8 run because that provided Mabton a cushion in the second quarter.
"The girls attacked the basket and were aggressive on defense," McCallum said, noting the Bears got as close as four points in the final stanza.
In the second quarter both teams scored in single digits, but Ki-Be outscored the Lady Vikes 7-4.
Mabton outscored the Bears 10-7 in the third quarter and the final stanza was much closer, with Ki-Be outscoring the Lady Vikings 12-11.
That wasn't enough to defeat Mabton, however.
"Even then (when Ki-Be got within four points of the lead) Alyssa Nash quickly hit a three-point shot to push it back to seven," said McCallum.
He said the Lady Viking defensive effort was solid and the Lady Vikes rebounded better, making a difference in the end result of the game.
Mabton beat the Bears to secure 41 loose balls from the glass, whereas Ki-Be secured 35 rebounds.
McCallum said the Lady Vikings still are struggling from the charity stripe, having only hit 8-of-24 shots on Saturday.
"The further we play the better the teams get and we can't afford to shoot that poorly from the line," said the coach.
Nash scored a team-high 12 points and recorded eight rebounds, while teammate Desanay Guerrero got a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.
Teammate Irene Pineda tallied nine points for the Lady Vikings.
Bailey Schroeder of Ki-Be gave Mabton some trouble, scoring 17 points for the Bears.
This coming Thursday, Mabton will compete against LaSalle in another loser-out affair. If the Lady Vikes win, they will compete at Riverview High School on Saturday for an opportunity to compete at Regionals.
