Sunnyside qualifies three girls for State

CONNELL - Three Lady Grizzly grapplers will represent Sunnyside at this coming weekend's 2013 Mat Classic State tourney.

Of the five Sunnyside girls competing at the Regional competition last Saturday in Connell, four of them earned at least fourth-place honors for a spot on the State roster. One of those spots in as an alternate.

Taking home a spotless record on the day was Sunnyside's Jessica Cardenas, who went 3-0. This 170-lb. Regional champ pinned her opponent from Kittitas in the first round of the title bout.

Joining her at State this coming weekend will be Lady Grizzly Daisy Chavez (118 lbs.), who wrestled in the 120-weight class and went 3-1 on the day for third-place honors in her division. Also taking her skills to State will be Sunnyside's Abigail Elizondo, who finished second in the 130-lb. weight division at Regionals, with a 3-1 record on the day.

Grapplers earning top three spots in their weight class are set to move on to State this coming Friday and Saturday. Fourth-place finishers at Regionals will also join their teammates as alternates in the State competition.

Sunnyside's Kayla Gonzalez (106 lbs.) posted a 2-2 record on the day at Regionals for fourth-place honors in her weight class and will travel to Tacoma as an alternate.

Earning fifth-place honors was Lady Grizzly Amanda Bazan, who went 1-2 in the 155-lb. weight class.
