Caballero tops 1,000-point mark in District semi-final game defeat
February 14, 2013
ELLENSBURG - With only 26 seconds to go in regulation time, the Lady Greyhounds were down by three against the Ellensburg Bulldogs when Marissa Caballero launched a shot from treyland to tie the score at 50-50 and send the game into overtime.
Unfortunately, the Lady 'Hounds couldn't match the feat in OT and lost the District tourney semi-final game, 55-53.
"The girls played their hearts out and gave us a chance to win in the end, that's what we wanted," said Grandview Coach David Gibb. "It's tough to go on the road come playoff time and I felt we played well enough to win. I couldn't have asked for anything more."
Caballero was on fire for the Grandview team, swiping the ball three times from Ellensburg ball handlers and popping in 15 points to put her over the 1,000-point total for her career.
Gibb congratulated the junior on her feat, saying she's stepped up her game for the team all season.
Lady Greyhound Payton Parrish led the team in scoring, knocking down 17 points with eight rebounds. She also stole the ball seven times in the game.
Breanna Lopez and Taylor Hall together contributed another seven steals and 19 points to the team while Jamila Shafer handled the boards, grabbing four rebounds off the glass.
"We had some girls step up and contribute points, rebounds, minutes when others got in foul trouble," said Gibb. "As a team I thought we gave a good effort. The girls should be very proud of themselves."
The Lady Greyhounds (17-5) are up against Selah tomorrow night, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. in Sunnyside. The winner will host a game against the second-place GNL team from District 7 next week while the loser will travel to the top GNL team's home court. Winners of those two games will advance to the Regional tournament.
