LEUVEN, BELGIUM – Julie Wedam of Sunnyside married Stijn VanTongerloo in a Belgium civil ceremony Aug. 10, which is mandated by law. The couple, then, recited their wedding vows in a Catholic marriage ceremony Aug. 13 in historic St. Kwintens Church. It is required in Belgium, and most of Europe, for there to be a civil marriage ceremony before the couple is allowed to have the religious ceremony, the bride’s mother, Sue Wedam said. The bride is the daughter of Mike and Sue Wedam, DVMs, of Sunnyside and the bridegroom is the son of Roger and Maria VanTongerloo of Belgium. The couple was attended by her sister, Kristen Wedam of Pullman, and his friend Merijn Fagard of Leuven. The bride’s lace wedding dress was purchased from Fashion Corner and carried by her mother to Belgium for the occasion. She graduated from Sunnyside High School in 2008 and from Washington State University in 2012. She earned her Master of Science in anthropology from Katholieke University, Leuven, in February 2016. The newlyweds met while they studied at Katholieke University, where he has earned two Master’s degrees. He works as a translator and is an editor of a number of written documents. There was a reception and dinner was held for family and friends following the church ceremony. The ceremony was attended by friends and family from the United States, as well as from all over Europe, including Ireland, Scotland and Russia. There will be an American reception at the Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center in Prosser on Sept. 4. The newlyweds will make their home in Leuven.
