Carol and George V. Johnson will mark their 60th wedding anniversary by renewing their marriage vows Saturday at a 5 p.m. mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. An open house at the church will follow the wedding mass. The couple was married May 5, 1956 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Yakima. The Johnsons have lived in the area for 75 years. He is known as Sunnyside’s milkman, having worked for the Carnation Milk Company for 26 years. He also was a Sunnyside School District bus driver for 24 years. Mrs. Johnson is a housewife and author of God Speaks to Us, which was published in 2008. She also operated a home craft shop making flower arrangements for special occasions, such as weddings. The couple have five children, 15 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The couple plan a family celebration after school is out.
Les and Helen Amundson are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary today. The couple was married May 24, 1946, in Idaho. He was a partner in Amundson Hardware, the family hardware store. She worked part-time as a store bookkeeper, along with caring for the couple’s five children; Paula Culver, Gayle Pykonen, Bunny Martinez, Max Amundson, all of the Lower Yakima Valley, and Geri Setter, of Seattle.
