SHS alumni squad ekes out 94-93 win against Grizzly boys

1999 Sunnyside High School graduate Lorenzo Sabedra still knows how to put the ball in the hole.

Last Friday evening, Sabedra knocked down three 3-pointers in the opening quarter enroute to scorching the net for a game high 34 points. Sabedra's Sunnyside High School alumni team ended up edging this year's Grizzly varsity, 94-93, in triple overtime.

Coupled with Saturday's loss to Connell, the Sunnyside varsity's non-league record for the season fell to 1-5.

This year's Grizzly squad had the opporunity to milk out its fourth quarter lead against the SHS alumni team, but allowed the former Sunnyside players to fight back and square the contest at 65-all. Three overtime periods were needed to settle the game.

"The end of the fourth quarter, we didn't protect the ball," said first year Sunnyside Coach Steve Urrutia. "We also didn't take care of the clock like we should have.

"We took some inopportune shots at the end of the fourth period, which allowed the alumni team to get back into the game.

"Shot selection, working the clock...those are things we have to work on," Urrutia said. "That's one of the pieces that's missing from our game. We're getting better, but there are still some flashbacks from yester-year."

In addition to Sabedra lighting up the scoreboard for 34 points, as well as hauling down a team high 10 rebounds in the contest, the alumni got double-digit scoring from 1996 grad Paul Van Pelt. He popped in 13 points in the winning cause. Also for the alumni, '99 grad Seth Startup chipped in 9 points, and '99 and '02 grads Dorian Manza and Josh Visser scored 7 apiece.

For this year's varsity, junior Jake Thomas had one of his better performances of the season. Thomas recorded a triple-double: scoring 13 points, snatching 16 rebounds and blocking 11 of the alumni's shots.

Also turning in tremendous efforts in the losing cause against the alumni were Jessie Ramirez and Kyle Van de Graaf, both of whom posted double-doubles. Ramirez snared 10 boards while dumping in 17 points, and Van de Graaf connected for 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Reid Schilperoort ended up as the varsity's leading scoring Friday night, whistling 19 points through the net.
