MABTON - The Mabton High School Lady Vikings were on top of their game Saturday, playing hard and winning two in a doubleheader against White Swan.
The Mabton team came out swinging, winning the first game of the afternoon 21-11. The lady Vikes followed it up with a close 26-25 victory in the second game.
"The girls did a great job," said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita.
In the first game the Mabton Lady Vikings were unstoppable, never falling behind the visiting White Swan team.
Mabton Assistant Coach Dave Mendoza said it was during the first game of the afternoon that Mayra Diaz was able to pull together some great plays.
"She had a great game at the plate," Mendoza said.
He said Diaz, who was 3-for-3 the first game, had two bunts that helped open up the door for other important hits.
The Lady Vikings started the second game with the same amount of energy they had in the first game, scoring 15 runs in the first inning alone. However, the second game wouldn't be as easy for the Mabton team.
By the end of the second inning, the White Swan team only trailed the Lady Vikings by two runs, 15-13. But that was as close as White Swan would get to the Mabton team, until a last inning rally that ended just one run short of tying up the game.
Mendoza said the coaching staff was really pleased with the way the girls played Saturday against White Swan.
"They know they have the talent to pull these things out," Mendoza said, noting that when White Swan stepped up the pressure so did the Lady Vikings.
"They showed a lot of heart," Sustaita said.
Mendoza said starting spring break coming off of a tough win against White Swan is good of the Lady Vikings, noting that it should givethe team a little momentum.
"We're really proud of them," Mendoza said.
The Lady Vikings (2-2, 4-3) will play again Thursday, April 15, at Lyle.
