Grandview police arrest DUI suspect following car crash

GRANDVIEW - A 28-year-old Mattawa man was arrested last Friday night following a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of West 5th Street and Euclid Road in Grandview just after 10 p.m.

According to Grandview Police Chief Dave Charvet, Alvaro Campos of Mattawa was traveling westbound on West 5th Street when police officers spotted him. Campos was reportedly driving erratically from curb to curb, said Charvet. The officer turned on his lights and pursued the suspect, who fled while reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour in the residential area.

Coming upon the four-way stop at West 5th Street and Euclid Road, the suspect hit a car stopped at the intersection from behind.

Charvet said he is unsure of how fast the suspect was traveling when he hit the car, but the second vehicle was pushed about 100 feet.

"It didn't hurt the person in the car that was hit, but she is stiff and sore," said Charvet, adding that both vehicles are most likely totally destroyed.

Campos smashed his head into the windshield of his car.

He was taken to the hospital and treated for the injury before being released to police.

Charvet said Campos is being charged with felony eluding, driving while intoxicated and driving without a vehicle operator's license.
