RICHLAND - Shooting bogey golf on the back nine at Horn Rapids Golf Course, Heidi Southern and Jensie Hernandez led the Sunnyside High School girls golf team to a split yesterday in the squad's Mid-Valley League openers.
The Lady Grizzlies defeated Grandview, 430-485. The host Hanford Falcons topped both Sunnyside and the Lady Greyhounds with their 332 team score. Hanford's Kristen Black and Molly Jensen shared medalist honors with identical eight-over 80's.
The low Grandview round turned in yesterday was a 108 by junior Alyson Rohde, a personal best. Rohde narrowly missed a birdie putt on No. 17, missing the cup by just an inch.
Southern, in turning in the low round for Sunnyside Monday, knocked down five pars enroute to posting a 93. She scored a 12-over 48 on the front side, but improved after the turn and shot bogey golf-a 45.
"Heidi shot very consistently on the back side," said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde.
Hernandez also turned in a strong finish for the Lady Grizzlies. She posted a 44 on the back side. Coupled with the 53 she absorbed on the first nine holes, Hernandez hit the clubhouse with a 97.
Megan Downing was next in for the Lady Grizzlies, scrambling her way to a 102 (49-53).
"That might have been Megan's best round ever," said Rohde.
Rounding out the team scoring for Sunnyside was freshman Christine Kim's 138 (62-76).
The Lady Grizzly golf team isn't scheduled to play again until Tuesday, April 20, when it hosts Prosser at Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course.
