Next year, Yakima County is hoping to begin construction on a gated railroad crossing on Swan Road, just off of Yakima Valley Highway near Sunnyside.
Kent McHenry, Yakima County traffic engineering manager, said the project is being funded through a Washington State Department of Transportation program. He explained that in 2002 Yakima County put in applications with the state for funding to place active crossing signals at all railroad crossings in the county that don't currently have active crossings. He said the county put in a separate application for each unguarded crossing in the county, and of those, six received funding from the state.
According to McHenry, the funding received from the state totals $160,000, which includes $8,500 for engineering and design costs and $151,500 for the actual construction of the active gated crossings.
McHenry said the county is currently working with Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the railroad company that owns the line that crosses Swan Road, on the design of the signalization.
