LYLE - Wednesday afternoon the Mabton Lady Vikings fastpitch softball team played a doubleheader against Lyle, letting the Lady Cougars run away with the first game, but managing to reign them in a little more effectively in the second game.
The Mabton team ultimately lost both games against Lyle. Losing the first game 18-1, the Lady Vikings did manage to keep the team from running away with the second game, which ended with a score of 9-7.
Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita said the first game was riddled with a lot of mistakes and walks, which ended up costing the Lady Vikings the game.
"We had a lot of mental mistakes," Sustaita said. "The girls didn't seem like they were prepared."
He said the Lyle team, although they finished with 18 runs, only had seven hits. The rest of the runs were due in part to the 19 walks Mabton gave them during the course of the first game. In fact, Sustaita said the Lyle team overall didn't do anything fantastic during the first game. "But we didn't do anything to help ourselves out either," he said.
The one run the Mabton team scored against Lyle was generated by Michelle Tellez, who managed to steal second and third base before Diana Lopez hit her in.
The Lady Vikings started the second game a little shaky, but managed to rally back and keep the score tight.
Sustaita said his team had a few walks in the first inning, which contributed to the eight runs Lyle scored. However, after that everything started to fall into place for the Lady Vikings.
"The bats got going," Sustaita said.
He said when the bats started connecting, the team's confidence began to build and the Lady Vikings stopped committing as many errors.
"It got them rallied up," Sustaita said.
He said the team's defense also improved, which is one reason the Lady Vikings were able to keep the score so close.
"Our defense did a great job in the second game," Sustaita said.
The team will play again Tuesday, April 20, in the Tri-Cities.
