YAKIMA - Jeff Bender, the club pro at Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course, tied for fifth place honors in a PGA pro-am event staged this past Monday at Yakima Country Club.
A total of 175 professional and amateur golfers competed in the one-day tourney, sponsored by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA.
Bender fired a one-under 71, tying with Von Smith of Desert Canyon Resort for fifth place honors in the professional division. Chris Isaacson of Tri City Country Club and Buster Whitney of Sun Tides Golf Course tied for top honors, each carding a six-under 66.
The Sunnyside golf pro was one of three professionals to claim a skin in Monday's tournament. Bender netted a 2 on the sixth hole to claim his skin.
The only Lower Yakima Valley amateur golfers to cash at Monday's pro-am were Mt. Adams Country Club members Ben Comer and Bob Girard.
Comer shot a two-over 74 to tie for sixth place honors in amateur division #1. The low amateur rounds were a pair of seven-under 65's, claimed by Manuel Orozco of Horn Rapids Golf Course and Danny Whitaker of Ellensburg Golf Course.
Girard tied for sixth place in amateur division #2 with an 84. The low round posted in amateur division #2 was a 78, posted by John Corning of Leavenworth Golf Course.
