Van strikes horse, rider hospitalized

OUTLOOK - 45-year-old Ismael G. Diaz of Outlook was hospitalized last night after sustaining injuries when the horse he was riding was struck by a passenger van.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Brian J. Bennett, 34, of Sunnyside was eastbound on Yakima Valley Highway Tuesday evening in a 1993 Ford Econoline van. Near the Price Road intersection, just outside Outlook, Bennett's van struck a horse. Troopers say Diaz was thrown from the horse as a result of the collision.

The animal was killed on impact, said troopers.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 p.m.

Diaz was transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. Bennett was uninjured in the collision. He was wearing a seatbelt. Troopers said Bennett's van was totaled as a result of the collision.
