Grandview hoop tourney a slam dunk


Manny Rivera looks to find a way to get the ball past a towering opponent in one of Saturday's games at the annual Grand Hoops Fiesta 3-on-3 tournament. Rivera and his teammates won the 9-10-year-old boys division.

GRANDVIEW - It has been a smashing success in Grandview for the last 11 years and this past weekend's annual Grand Hoops Fiesta 3-on-3 basketball tournament was no different.

A total of 35 teams took to the area of West Second Street near Grandview Middle School to battle it out for bragging rights.

The winners of the 15-18-year-old boys division was The Cherry Pickers, consisting of James Vela, Aaron Vela, Nate Zavala and Michael Jimenez. Taking runner-up honors in the division were Cold Down Easy's. Team members included Timmy Lemos, Michael Sanchez, James Sanchez and Beto Lopez.

Taking championship honors in the 15-18-year-old girls division was the team I'm Lovin' It. Team members were Jessica Rodriguez, Danica Rodriguez, Mari Cornejo and Tohnya Wysong. Claiming runner-up honors was Here 2 Play. Team members included Jordan Brown, Courtney Faulk, Claire Raap and Kass Stearns.

No Diggity, No Doubt was the winner of the 13-14-year-old boys bracket. Team members were Adrian Cantu, C.J. Lopez, Marty Guillen and Andrew Garcia. The Grizzlies, consisting of Kyle Pearson, Cameron Boboth, Adam Ramos and Nathan Cornelius, finished second in the division.

Winners of the 13-14-year-old girls division was Yellow Lipstick, which included team members Yessenia Trevino, Tashia Sundet, Marissa Trevino and Maria Martinez.

Claiming top honors in the boys 11-12-year-old division were G-Town Dawgs, which consisted of Christian Schrank, Tony Vela, Adrian Vela and Adrian Reyes. Taking runner-up honors were the Sunnyside Grizzlies. Team members included Nathan Espinoza, P.J. Garcia, Logan Parsons and Kyle Zamora.

Thunder took championship honors in the 11-12-year-old girls division. Team members included Taylor Flores, Tamara Jones, Tayshia Hunt and Ashley Dezellem. Claiming runner-up honors were The Lady Hounds, which consisted of Jessica Lopez, Gabby Montelongo, Gladys Lupercio and Kaitee Eucker.

The Grandview Lunchbox Hoopsters, consisting of Manny Rivera, Julian Rivera, Fabian Ruiz and Jesus Medina, won the 9-10-year-old boys division. Claiming runner-up honors were the Prosser Super Mustangs. Team members included Trey Dezellem, Zach Durbin, Danny Raap and Drew Dezellem.

Winners of the 9-10-year-old girls division were the Grandview Hoopstars. Team members included Payton Parrish, Shyann Guillen, Crystal Navarro and Krysta Castillo. Placing second in the division were the Grandview Lil Hounds, which consisted of Aryian Matheny, Ashlyn Sehnert, Karissa Trinidad and Rikki Verduzco.

There was also a 3-point shooting contest. The following are the individual results:

15-18-year-old girls-Jessica Rodriguez.

13-14-year-old girls-Bailey Dezellem.

11-12-year-old boys-Dominic Garza.

11-12-year-old girls-Jessica Lopez.

9-10-year-old boys-Isaiah Ruiz.
