A Sunnyside police officer on his way to training this morning smelled smoke in his police cruiser and drove the vehicle to the Sunnyside Fire Department to be extinguished.
According to Police Capt. Phil Schenck, the vehicle was the oldest car in the fleet and was only used as a vehicle that officers could drive to and from training.
The fire is believed to have started in the car radio's electrical system and spread to flares in the trunk. Firefighters extinguished the fire. It was then towed to the city shop.
According to Fire Chief Jim Stanton, city employees are looking into how much damage the vehicle sustained to see if the vehicle is salvageable.
