S'side man faces attempted rape, burglary charges

A 24-year-old Sunnyside man is in Yakima for a preliminary hearing on charges of first degree attempted rape and first degree burglary.

The suspect was arrested by Sunnyside police officers Monday after he allegedly broke into the bedroom of a 13-year-old girl, according to Sunnyside Det. Jim Orth. Police say the suspect entered the bedroom and attempted to rape the girl, and when she resisted he grabbed a screwdriver off the ground and threatened the teen. The would-be assailant fled when people in the 13th Street home attempted to help the young woman.

Orth said the victim knew the suspect and was able to give police an accurate description.

He was arrested and is now facing charges in Yakima.
