BURBANK - The Mabton High School wrestling team got an early start to its season last night at the Columbia-Burbank Takedown Tournament.
"We did well," said Mabton Coach John Kilian. "I was really, really impressed. Some guys hit some moves we have been working on."
It wasn't too shabby of a beginning for the Vikings, as seven of the 14 wrestlers Mabton took to the tournament placed in the top three.
Kilian had two of his wrestlers grab top honors in the takedown tourney.
At 125 lbs., Mabton's Victor Bustos was the victor. Bustos wrestled in only one match, but Kilian said he looked dominating.
The other first place finisher for the Vikes was sophomore powerhouse Robert Marquez at 275 lbs. Marquez went 3-0 at the tournament.
"He looked good," said Kilian. "He had some decent opponents."
Kilian said Marquez did a nice job of executing some moves, such as a fireman's carry, against his opponents.
Mabton had two wrestlers take runner-up honors with 2-1 marks. At 119 lbs., Andy Torres grabbed second place honors. Kilian said in the finals, Torres lost to a powerful wrestler from Royal City, who placed eighth at State last year.
"He looked good," said Kilian. "Andy is probably our best technician."
Cesar Macedo had the other runner-up finish for the Vikings, at 160 lbs. Kilian said it was a nice outing for Macedo.
Mabton had three wrestlers go 2-1 at the takedown tournament to finish third. The wrestlers lost in either their first or second matches of the night, dropping them down to the consolation bracket.
Placing third for Mabton at 140 lbs. was Marco Zepeda.
"He had some tough guys," said Zepeda. "Marco is one of our better technicians."
Also placing third for the Vikes was Jovani Ochoa (145 lbs) and Noe Calixto (189 lbs).
The Vikings will be at the West Valley Invitational this Saturday.
