Torchey Cohu is the newest member of the City of Sunnyside Board of Adjustment.
Cohu, 55, was officially appointed by the Sunnyside City Council during the Nov. 22 meeting.
Interestingly enough, Cohu found out about an opening on the board when he applied for a setback variance.
"They had an opening there and I thought it would be interesting," said Cohu.
Cohu feels his background in construction will help him with his role on the board, which deals with construction related issues. Cohu said he has been in the construction industry his whole life. His father was a contractor and Cohu himself owned a construction business for 10 years. Cohu now works for a private construction business.
Four years ago, Cohu moved back to Sunnyside. However, Cohu is practically a lifelong Valley resident, being born in Prosser and having lived in such places as Grandview and West Valley.
One of the things Cohu feels he will be able to bring to his position on the board is a common sense approach, as he understands many of the issues that will be coming before board members. Cohu said he is looking forward to bringing some different viewpoints and insight to the board.
Even though he doesn't know many of the board of adjustment members, Cohu said he is looking forward to working with them.
Cohu added that he is looking forward to his time on the board.
"I think it will be interesting," said Cohu.
Cohu said he feels the City of Sunnyside is at a crucial period right now in its growth. He said with all of the construction going on in the community, he hopes to be able to assist the city with making the right decisions.
"The city manager (Bob Stockwell) has a real good vision. He needs some support," said Cohu. "Sunnyside could really be a great town."
Cohu's term on the board of adjustment expires June 30, 2007.
