FINLEY - Make it 3-0 for the Mabton High School boys basketball team.
The Vikings picked up their third consecutive win to move to 3-0 on the season with a 56-42 victory over RiverView Tuesday night.
A solid defensive effort and three players scoring in double digits set the tone for the Vikings.
Mabton was able to hold RiverView's two best players, Brian Combs and Matt Smith, to 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Mabton Coach Brock Ledgerwood said he was very impressed with the outing of his team last night against a solid RiverView squad.
The Panthers came out in a 1-3-1 match-up zone to start the game.
"We really tore that apart," said Ledgerwood. "We finally got our running game going."
The key for Mabton in the first half was the Vikings' ability to attack the basket, said Ledgerwood. Mabton outscored RiverView 13-7 in the first quarter and 15-11 in the second period to take a comfortable 28-18 lead into the break.
The Vikes, though, came out of intermission half asleep. The Panthers went on a 10-2 run to start the second half. Ledgerwood said he was able to take a timeout and calm his squad down.
"We went out and finished the third quarter strong," said Ledgerwood. "We started attacking the basket and playing better defense."
After being outscored 15-12 in the third quarter, the Vikings finished the game with a 14-9 fourth quarter showing.
The Vikes got a big game from Alex Zavala, who had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
"He has been doing really well attacking the basket," said Ledgerwood.
Also scoring in double figures for the Vikes were A.J. Valencia, 12, and Andy Rodriguez, 10.
Ledgerwood said RiverView struggled to keep up with the speed of his team.
"We beat them down the floor every time," said Ledgerwood. "Our quickness and our passing was superior to them."
Mabton had another strong outing on the glass, collecting 22 rebounds.
The Vikes host 1A Wahluke this Saturday.
"They should be a tough team," said Ledgerwood.
