KITTITAS - The bus trip probably proved more exciting Tuesday for the Sunnyside Christian High School boys basketball team than the game, itself.
The Knights traveled to Kittitas last night and easily handled the Coyotes, winning 77-43.
"We create so many match-up problems (for them)," said Sunnyside Christian Coach Dean Wagenaar.
Wagenaar didn't have many negative comments about the way his team played last night, other than saying his team missed a few assignments.
The game didn't get off to a nice start for the Coyotes. Sunnyside Christian shredded Kittitas' zone defense in the first quarter, attacking the basket.
"We just kind of penetrated and dished," said Wagenaar.
Wagenaar said Andrew Schutt got things off to a nice start, scoring 9 of his 19 points in the first quarter. Wagenaar added that Schutt had a number of offensive putbacks.
"Andrew had a good game," said Wagenaar. "He got us off to a good start."
Teammate Jordan Haak had another solid game, scoring 6 of his 12 points in the opening period.
The Knights went on a 17-6 run in the first quarter and ended the opening half with a 21-10 outing in the second period to lead 38-16.
The game was basically decided at the beginning of the second half. Following a 3-pointer from Chad Den Boer, who led the Knights with 20 points, Sunnyside Christian scored the first 13 points of the third quarter.
Another key for the Knights was that Sunnyside Christian had only seven turnovers, compared to the Coyotes 20. Kittitas had 12 turnovers in the first half. Wagenaar said Kittitas couldn't handle a 1-2-1 half-court trap defense the Knights slapped on in the first half.
One player Wagenaar wanted to give special kudos to was Aaron Van de Graaf, who had 8 points off the bench.
"He played pretty well last night," said Wagenaar.
Sunnyside Christian (0-0, 2-0) has a pair of big non-league games on the schedule in the next week. The Knights will host 2A Kiona-Benton on Saturday and then 1A Granger next Tuesday night.
"I am sure they will play hard," Wagenaar said of Ki-Be. "I expect our kids to play well."
