Mabton defeats Wahluke 48-21

MABTON - Mabton's Michelle Tellez led the Lady Vikings to victory Saturday night as they defeated the Wahluke Warriors 48-21.

Tellez scored 20 of Mabton's 48 points. She also led the team with six rebounds and had four assists.

"She was attacking the basket and doing everything she's supposed to do," said Mabton Coach Mike Roettger. "She was going hard to the basket."

With such a deafening defeat, Roettger said that his girls still didn't play as well as they could have. Down his starting point guard due to a non-sports related injury, Alida Mendoza took over the role.

"We started out on a 9-0 run in the first quarter," said Roettger. "Then we kind of got into a slump."

He said the defense could have been stronger.

"We didn't deny the ball really well," he said.

In the third quarter, the Lady Vikings were able to pick up the pace and outscored Wahluke 17-2. Wahluke's two points came in the first minutes of the quarter before Mabton was able to shut them down.

In the final quarter of the game, Roettger pulled his starting players and gave the bench a chance to play. It was the only quarter that Wahluke was able to outscore Mabton, 11-7.

Although critical of his players, Roettger said there are some tough games ahead and he believes now is the time to work out some of the bugs in their game.

League play begins this weekend for Mabton as the Lady Vikes face Yakama Tribal and Klickitat.
