GRANDVIEW - Monday was a tough night for the Grandview Lady Greyhounds, who started out tough against Prosser, only to allow a 51-point run in the second half that ended in a 77-47 win for the Mustangs.
The Grandview girls were able to keep pace with Prosser through the first half, stepping up their defensive intensity and working to slow down the Mustangs' game. However, when the Lady 'Hounds stepped back onto the court in the second half, they weren't able to keep up with an intense Prosser team.
Grandview Coach Adolfo Hinojosa said in the second half Prosser stepped up its defense, putting a little more pressure on the Lady 'Hounds and trapping out.
"We avoided their trapping in the first half," Hinojosa said.
However, in the second half Grandview fell victim to Prosser.
"We couldn't handle Prosser's press in the second half," Hinojosa said. "I kept emphasizing on making extra passes and in the second half they weren't doing it."
Hinojosa said in the second half of the game his team showed a lack of defensive intensity and untimely mental lapses.
"In the second half, a totally different team went out there," Hinojosa said.
He noted that in the first half of the game Grandview was able to keep up with Prosser. He said his team was rebounding when it had to and was making good transitions.
"We just played our plan to the fullest in the first half," Hinojosa said. "But we couldn't do what we wanted in the second half."
Helping the Lady 'Hounds in their battle against the Mustangs were seniors Jessica Rodriguez and Mari Cornejo. Rodriguez had 20 points on the night, with Cornejo contributing another 14 points.
"Those two played well all night," Hinojosa said of the two seniors.
Hinojosa said his team needs to realize the most important thing about playing basketball is knowing that they are capable of playing the game.
The Grandview girls will get a short rest before they take to the court again Saturday against Cascade.
