LaVern “Vern” LeRoy Rippy, 85, long-time Sunnyside resident and businessman passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at Sun Terrace.

Vern was born Nov. 3, 1919 in Pottawatomie County, Okla., the son of Darius and Dovie (Holt) Rippy. Vern received his education in Oklahoma.

On Oct. 20, 1940 he married Myrtle Rogers in Anadarko, Okla. In 1941, Vern started working for Consolidated Aeronautics in San Diego, Calif.

From 1946 to 1952 Vern bought logging trucks and worked in the logging industry in Cottage Grove, Calif. The Rippy family moved to Sunnyside in 1953 and began Vern’s Service Station, which they operated until 1973. He later worked as a mechanic for Sunnyside Valley Irrigation from 1974 to 1982.

Vern enjoyed fixing just about anything and loved visiting with friends and family.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Karolyn Rippy of Sunnyside; one grandson, Sean Rippy and wife, Jennifer, of Grand Rapids, Mich.;

one granddaughter, Angie Hefner and husband, Matt, of Fall City; four great- grandchildren, Kaelyn and Jonathan Rippy, Aidan and Mason Hefner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myrtle Rippy; and son, Gerald L. Rippy.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, from 1 to 5 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, from 8:30 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memorial Park, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Those wishing to honor Vern’s memory may contribute to the donor’s choice.
