YAKIMA - Two Sunnyside girls opened the 2004-05 gymnastics season in fine fashion last Saturday.
Competing at the Ho Ho Ho Classic, sponsored by Gymnastics Plus of Yakima, Jamie Zylstra and Kristen Wedam each garnered fourth place finishes in their respective divisions.
Zylstra, a freshman at Sunnyside High School and the daughter of Johan and Ginnie Zylstra, competed against Level 6 gymnasts. Her top score in the four disciplines came in the vault, where she drew a 7.95 from the judges. It earned her fourth place honors.
The Sunnyside freshman also nailed down fifth place honors in the bars competition among Level 6 gymnasts. She scored a 6.25.
Coupled with a score of 6.40 for her work on the beam and a 5.45 for her floor exercise, Zylstra posted an all-around score of 26.05. Her next competition will be Jan. 8 at the New Year's Blast, also sponsored by Gymnastics Plus.
Wedam, the daughter of Mike and Sue Wedam and a sixth grader at Sunnyside's Chief Kamiakin Elementary School, placed fourth overall among Level 4 gymnasts at the Yakima competition last Saturday. She posted an all-around score of 31.85. Wedam's individual scores were 8.8 in the vault, 6.8 on the bars, 8.15 on the beam and 8.1 in the floor exercise.
