Vikes win double dual

FINLEY - Thursday night was a good night for the Mabton High School wrestling team, but Coach John Kilian still wasn't totally satisfied with his wrestlers' efforts.

The Vikings won last night's double dual meet against RiverView and Wahluke, but Kilian said his team wrestled a bit flat.

"Our moves weren't very good," said Kilian. "We were sluggish."

The Vikings beat RiverView 48-12 and Wahluke 46-24.

Against RiverView, there were no matches at 103, 125, 130 and 135 lbs. Against Wahluke, there were no matches at 103 and 130 lbs. Mabton forfeited at 125 and 135 lbs. to the Warriors.

Luis Aviles went 2-0 on the night. He pinned RiverView's Colton Watts in 1:42. Aviles' other win was a pin over Wahluke's Elliott Carvo in 3:15.

"He had a good night," said Kilian of Aviles.

Andy Torres won by forfeit at 119 lbs. against RiverView. Torres pinned Wahluke's La Kielian in 1:29.

"Andy looked pretty good," said Kilian.

Mabton's Hector Sosa won by forfeit at 140 lbs. against RiverView.

Michael Clark wrestled for Mabton at 145 lbs. against RiverView, pinning Dillon Dellinger in 1:50. Clark dropped down to 140 lbs. against Wahluke, winning by forfeit.

"Michael is doing well," said Kilian.

Moises Gutierrez had a rough night for the Vikings at 152 lbs. Gutierrez lost to RiverView's Ben Buck by pin in 2:42. He then lost to Wahluke's Max Tamalwash in 4:09. Kilian said Tamalwash is a good wrestler.

Mabton's Cesar Macedo had a solid night, winning both his matches. Macedo was leading 4-1 when he pinned RiverView's Kyle Buck in 3:38. Macedo then dismantled Wahluke's Chris Culverwell 15-1.

"He dominated him," said Kilian.

Macedo scored two takedowns and three 3-point near falls in the Wahluke match.

At 171 lbs., Mabton's Adrian Magana pinned RiverView's Jon Gier in 1:17. He then lost to Wahluke's Jacob Christensen in 3:15.

Eli Perez lost to RiverView's Mike Pierce in 48 seconds at 189 lbs. Perez won by forfeit against Wahluke.

"The kid was tough," said Kilian of Pierce. "He was a real strong, young man."

Mabton's Daniel Lahde won by forfeit at 215 lbs. against RiverView. Thomas Martin won by forfeit for Mabton at 215 lbs. against the Warriors.

Mabton heavyweight Robert Marquez improved to 10-0 on the season last night. He slapped around RiverView's Mike Riddell in 1:13. Marquez then took a forfeit victory at 275 lbs.

"We did OK," said Kilian. "It was certainly a letdown from our emotional high of winning the Granger Ironman tournament, but even Shaq has a bad game once in a while."

Up next for the Vikings is the Warden Invitational next Tuesday, Dec. 21.
