MABTON - In the first two league games of the season the Mabton High School girls basketball team dominated the court, defeating Yakama Tribal 74-14 and Klickitat 54-25. The two wins push Mabton's league record to 2-0, 6-1 overall.
Mabton Coach Mike Roettger said his girls played a good game Friday night against Yakama Tribal, scoring 30 points in the first quarter.
"It was a good way to start league play," said Roettger. "I was a little surprised. To put up 74 points is a lot to put up."
Shutting down Yakama's play in the first quarter, the team was only able to net three points.
"I don't even think they got across the half court line in the first four minutes of the game," said the Mabton coach.
Roettger said starting off strong has been something he has been emphasizing to his team all season. Letting up on the intensity some in the last half of the game, Roettger said in the third quarter the girls were in zones they've never played before, but it worked out for them.
He said that he is still trying to stress the importance of playing the entire 32 minutes of the game. Roettger explained that it will be especially important when playing some of the tougher teams later in the season.
All of the Mabton players scored in Friday night's game.
Leading the team was Patty Mendoza with 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Saturday night it was Mabton's 32 rebounds and the Vandal's 29 turnovers that helped the Lady Vikings secure a victory.
Down 5-0 in the first minutes of the game, it wasn't long before the Lady Vikings took a commanding lead, outscoring Klickitat 14-7 in the first quarter and 14-0 in the second quarter.
"We had our moments in this game," said Roettger. At one point the Lady Vikes were up by 35 points, but Klickitat was able to come back to within 23.
Roettger said Mabton was pressing the ball well and boxing out in perfect form. He said his only complaint was three minutes into the fourth quarter, when the Lady Vikings slipped in intensity, allowing Klickitat to score.
"The Klickitat girls are big, tall girls," said Roettger.
What pleased Roettger most about this past weekend's games is that Mabton was able to keep each its opponents scoreless in one quarter.
"We're exceeding my expectations," he added.
The Lady Vikings are scheduled to play 2A Stevenson Tuesday night at home.
