QUINCY - Matt Medina and Dustin Kniep poured in a combined 44 points to lead the Quincy Jackrabbits to a 69-54 non-league victory over the Sunnyside High School boys basketball team last night.
The Jacks opened the game with a 9-0 run, extending their lead to 11 points with a 23-12 showing in the first quarter.
"They came out on fire," said Sunnyside Coach Steve Urrutia, "But as has been the case for much of the season, we came out of the gates way too slow.
"Again, we were forced to claw our way back the entire game. It takes too much energy to get back into it when you fall that far behind at the beginning," he said.
The Grizzlies did fight back, though. Behind senior Cody Heckert, who dropped in 9 points in the final quarter, which included popping in two from treyland, Sunnyside cut Quincy's lead to 59-54. But, the Jackrabbits closed out the game with a 10-0 run to account for the final 69-54 win.
Medina was the high point scorer for the game, leading Quincy with 27 points. Kniep, his teammate, hit three treys enroute to chipping in 17 points.
Heckert led all Sunnyside scorers with 16 points. Senior Jake Thomas added a 15-point effort for the Grizzlies (3-4), and teammates Reid Schilperoort and Derrick Simmons scored 10 and 8 points, respectively.
The biggest difference in the game was the Jackrabbits' performance from the free throw line. They hit 25-of-34 shots, compared to Sunnyside's 12-for-15 performance. The Grizzlies were called for 24 fouls, compared to 14 whistles against Quincy.
"It made you wonder about the non-calls," said Urrutia.
