The Sunnyside High School freshman boys basketball team improved its season record to 2-3 with a pair of wins over West Valley and Kiona-Benton's frosh squads.
Against West Valley in their league opener, the freshman Grizzlies received a 15-point scoring effort from Gibby Briones and got 11 points from D.J. Palomarez in their 42-31 victory.
"This was by far the best team performance of the season," said Coach Paul Van Pelt. "I am extremely proud of the way they played team basketball, not only offensively, but they also had a strong showing on defense as well."
Sunnyside limited West Valley to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.
The Grizzlies outrebounded West Valley by 15 boards. Diego Burgueno and Brice Rinehold led the team on the glass with six rebounds apiece.
Against Ki-Be's freshman team, the Grizzlies broke out to a 31-11 first half lead enroute to posting a dominating 50-19 victory.
"We came out with intensity and were able to force some quick turnovers that resulted into some easy, fastbreak points for us," said Van Pelt.
He added the scoring was evenly distributed in the Ki-Be game, with 10 of the 12 Grizzlies finding the hoop. Rinehold, Justin Bos and Bermudez led the way with 8, 7 and 6 points, respectively.
