Christmas day fire damages barn

Yakima County Fire District #5 firemen were called out early Christmas morning to save a storage barn in the 3100 block of Waneta Road, south of Sunnyside.

The firemen arrived at 7:53 a.m. to find a fire in the attic and roof of the building, which was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the fire. The firemen were able to bring the blaze under control a little after 9 a.m.

The building, owned by Denny Jones, sustained damage to the attic and roof, as well as water damage throughout the building, according to YFD #5 Capt. Ken Shipman.

He said the estimated property loss was $10,000 to the structure, which was valued at $20,000. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation by the Yakima County Fire Marshal.
