The good news for the Sunnyside High School wrestling team is there are a ton of Grizzlies going to the Sub-regional tournament at Hanford High School this Saturday. The bad news is that the brackets are drawn up, and there are a lot of Sunnyside pairings.
The Grizzlies will be looking to advance as many of their wrestlers as possible to the Regional tournament Valentine's Day in Sunnyside. The top four wrestlers out of Sub-regionals qualify for Regionals.
Sunnyside has three No. 1 seeds heading into Sub-regionals.
The first of the top seeds for the Grizzlies is Ray Romero at 145 lbs. Romero (26-1) will face freshman Matt Bunday of West Valley-Yakima in the opening round. Romero is in the same bracket as Tyler Leighty of Prosser and Tyler Brischle of West Valley-Spokane.
Also at 145 lbs. for the Grizzlies is Ulysses Olivarez. Olivarez will face Brandon Evans of West Valley-Yakima in the opening round. The winner of that match will face the victor of the Kellan Cox (Hanford) and Thomas Whittum (Clarkston) bout.
The second of Sunnyside's top seeds is Joe Evans at 171 lbs. Evans (27-3) will face Grizzly teammate John Van Wingerden in the opening round. Evans is in the same bracket as Grandview's Rodrigo Rodriguez, who will face Jeff White of West Valley-Spokane.
The last of Sunnyside's top seeds is Gabe Lara, 215 lbs. Lara will begin his quest to advance to Regionals against teammate Casey Smith. The winner of this match will face the winner of the Kyle Pierce (Hanford) versus Kit Lemire (West Valley-Spokane) bout.
At 103 lbs. Sunnyside's Jesus Alquicira will meet Wapato's Mario Vela in a bout between two freshman. The winner of this match will face Tony Valente of West Valley-Spokane, who received a first-round bye. The other Sunnyside wrestler at 103 lbs. is Ricardo Rivera.
