The Sunnyside City Council this past Monday night approved an agreement with Gray & Osborne Inc. of Yakima to assist with the South First Street improvement project.
Sunnyside Engineer Jim Bridges gave Council background on the project. He said in October 2003, the city began its search for an engineering firm, eventually selecting Gray & Osborne. Former Sunnyside City Manager Dave Fonfara was instrumental in securing $1.49 million in funding for South First Street through Sen. Patty Murray's office in Washington D.C., Bridges added.
The contract with Gray & Osborne totals $235,000. There is another $14,000 held in a contingency fund for the project.
Bridges said the Washington State Department of Transportation has approved the contract with Gray & Osborne to ensure compliance with state contracting regulations.
Gray & Osborne will provide overall project management for the South First Street improvement project. The engineering firm will work with traffic counts, surveying, right-of-way research, pre-design, and collect other needed traffic data.
Bridges said he will come back before Council with regular reports on the project. There will also be three public workshops for residents to attend to find out more about the project.
